Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about Phile Premium, your account and importing. If yours isn’t here, email support@phile.app.
What does Phile Premium cost?
Phile is free to use. Phile Premium adds saving places, custom folders, goals, ranked lists and Stats. It costs $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year, and the app shows the price of each plan before you subscribe.
Premium is sold through the App Store and billed by Apple. You need a Phile account to subscribe, not a guest account. To upgrade, open Settings in Phile (the person button at the top right of the main screen) and tap Billing.
How do I get Premium back on a new phone, or after reinstalling?
Premium belongs to your Phile account, not to your phone. Sign in to the same Phile account you subscribed with, using the same Apple, Google or email sign-in, and Premium comes back on its own.
If it doesn’t:
- Make sure this iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account you subscribed with.
- In Phile, open Settings and tap Billing. It will say Free.
- At the bottom of the screen that opens, tap Restore purchases.
Phile then looks for a Premium subscription on that Apple Account and adds it to the Phile account you’re signed in to. You won’t be charged again. If it says “Nothing to restore,” check which Apple Account the iPhone is using, or email us.
How do I change or cancel my subscription?
Apple bills your subscription, so you change or cancel it in your Apple Account. On your iPhone, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Phile. If you have Premium, you can also open Settings in Phile and tap Billing to go to the same screen.
Deleting the app or your Phile account does not cancel your subscription. After you cancel, Premium stays on until the end of the period you’ve already paid for. Everything you made with it, like places, custom folders, goals and ranked lists, stays in your account and stays visible. Changing it, adding more or seeing your Stats needs Premium again. Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies.
How do I delete my account, and what gets deleted?
In Phile, open Settings, tap Profile, then Delete Account at the bottom, and confirm. If you’re using a guest account, open Settings and tap Delete My Data. You can also email support@phile.app and ask us to do it.
Deletion is immediate and can’t be undone. It removes your account, Philes, folders, goals, tags, notes, People and their photos, imports, notification settings and devices, and any blocks you made or that name you. Recommendations you sent are removed from the recipients’ Inboxes. If someone already saved one, their copy, with your name and note, stays in their account.
Copies of our database are kept for up to 30 days, so your data is gone from our backups within 30 days. Reports you made or that concern you stay in our support email, as do records of Premium purchases.
Deleting your account does not cancel Premium. Cancel it in your Apple Account first (see above). The Privacy Policy has the details.
I had a Phile account before. Where is it?
Thank you for being one of our early users. The first version of Phile, from 2018 to 2020, and the server behind it have been retired. On October 30, 2026 we deleted every account from that version, along with everything saved in it. We’re sorry, but your old Philes can’t be recovered.
You’re very welcome to start again. Download Phile from the App Store and sign up. You can use the same email address as before.
Can I bring in my books and movies from other apps?
Yes. Go to www.phile.app/import in any browser, or open Settings in Phile and tap Import, and sign in with your Phile account. Importing needs a Phile account, not a guest account. Then pick where you’re coming from:
- Goodreads: the CSV file from Goodreads’ export page. Books go into your Books folder.
- Letterboxd: the ZIP file from Letterboxd’s data export. Films go into your Movies folder.
- Libby: the JSON file from Libby’s timeline export. Books go into your Books folder.
- A list in your notes app: paste it in, one thing per line. Books, movies, shows, music, podcasts or places all work, and anything you wrote after a title becomes your note.
Each step tells you how to get the file. You see the matches before anything is added, and anything already in Phile is skipped. We never ask for your Goodreads, Letterboxd or library password. We keep an import’s rows for 30 days after it finishes so you can review or undo it, then delete them. The Philes it added stay in your account.
Can I use Phile outside the United States?
Not at the moment. Phile is offered only in the United States, and it’s available only in the US App Store.
